3 out of 5 stars Frustrating!   November 15, 2009
Gulfax (Glasgow)
Lair looks absolutely stunning. The cut scenes and voice acting are excellent, the in-game graphics are amazing. The plot is pretty good too. It's just a shame that attention has been lavished on the cosmetic aspects of the game, and it wasn't paid to making it enjoyable to play.

Basically, you fly a dragon around a series of landscapes, fight with other dragons, bosses and footsoldiers. It's a really fun concept. The controls are a bit different to other games as you fly by tilting the controller. It does take a while to master it, but it's worth doing, although won't suit everyone.

I really enjoyed the missions where I got to cause havoc with the opposing army - you can breathe fire on the soldiers, land on them and take them out with your claws; it's almost like the battle scenes in Lord of the Rings and very satisfying.

However, the other missions need you to do things that are a bit fiddly; for example, flying through narrow ravines avoiding spotlights. You sometimes get to sections where the game prompts you to use the controller in a different way from normal - I usually ended up flailing about, not really understanding what I was meant to be doing. I think a player should be able to use the controller in the same way through an entire game; that the developers had to include on screen prompts should maybe have indicated to them that the game wasn't as intuitive as it could have been.

Another problem was with the invisible walls on the boundary of the play area. In some missions you'll be merrily flying along and then suddenly your dragon veers off in a different direction; it's only then that you realise you've flown to the limit of where you can.

The fights between dragons were also a bit unsatisfying; trying to hit them with fireballs was fun, but sometimes you ended up fighting them up close, and I usually ended up just hitting random buttons.

Finally, I had problems with the pointer that was meant to show you what direction to head it - it really confused me at first as it always seemed to be pointing up. The map was pretty useless, which was annoying; particularly in the level where you fly around a desert and all the scenery looks the same.

There's a lot to like in Lair, and I felt annoyed that such a good concept was so limited by level designs that really didn't mesh well with the control system. It would almost have made a better film than video game.

5 out of 5 stars Lair... Hmm.   October 28, 2009

I was just reading the reviews today and I was really suprized at the 1 star ratings and 2 star ratings. This is a really good game. The graphics are amazing and crisp even on my 16" Acoustic Solutions SD TV. The controls ARE annoying but you can easily master the controls after 30 minutes of playing.
It can just get a little repetetive but then the great dragon battles and challenging bosses swoop straight in and make it exiting!

Overall 5/5
Fun 3/5
Gameplay 4/5
Graphics 5/5
Storyline 3.5/5

By the way, this game really should get more as the graphics are crisp and you can disable six-axis in the Options tab, making the dragon more controllable.
Also, I really do think the characters/humans look realistic.

2 out of 5 stars Don't buy it new - if at all.   August 25, 2009

First of all the controls do work but they are very difficult to get used to and basically get in the way of what could have been a good game. The graphics are ok and the cut-scenes excellent but there are just too many of them. Not one of my all time favourites and not worth buying new.

3 out of 5 stars Potential was there, but a few flaws...   August 14, 2009

I love dragons. I love video games. Put the two together and I am in absolute heaven.
Or so I thought.
After waiting with baited breath for the arrival of LAIR in my local game store, my bf and I brought it home and popped it into our PS3 only to find out....the controls are damned difficult.
At first I thought it was simply him having issues mastering the sixaxis controls, as I'd spent some time previously playing "Flow" where the only controls are via the controller's sixaxis sensors. But when I got my hands on the controller finally and tried it out myself it was difficult, sluggish, and overall very frustrating. So much so that I believe we tried to play this game for 2 hours between the two of us and we haven't put it back in since. It felt like a lot of money to spend on a game that was difficult to maneuver through. (As an aside we're both experienced, veteran gamers. We've had plenty of chances to sample challenging game play AND poor character controls. This game features the latter.)
The game would definitely benefit from giving the players the ability to choose between either using the sixaxis controls or going with the old standbys, your LS and RS on the game controller. WarHawk was designed this way and there has been plenty of time wasted in our house on that game because we could choose between the two.
I do want to give the game props for being visually stunning to play, as well as having a few interesting features. Being able to slam in to the enemy by jerking the sixaxis controller was, although difficult to accomplish, an interesting way to attack them. It definitely made you feel as if you were more in to the story that way. Being blown all over the practice map was irritating but did give you an idea of just how harsh the conditions were that you were dealing with in that world.
If they ever do run the rumored patch to allow you to control the dragon with the joysticks instead of the sixaxis, I will absolutely pick the game back up to play it. Running the practice course was very fun and could only be improved with greater ability to handle your mount. With that one correction I would easily restore the other two stars to this review.
